Lyrics Snippet #22

Today's snippet is not especially inspiring or exceptional in my opinion...I chose it simply because I just realized that "Killing an Arab" by "The Cure" is a song about the novel "Stranger" by Albert Camus. And since there has not been a Lyrics Snippet in a long time I decided that this was sufficient.

Replacing the Display on My Nexus 4

Before

I am not exactly the luckiest guy on earth when it comes to cell phones. One phone I lost, one got stolen, and one just died on me. I also managed to knock loose a picture with a vacuum cleaner which in turn fell directly onto my phone’s display and shattered it. And just recently I dropped my Nexus 4 while sitting on a chair reading with the phone in my lap. The result was a partly shattered display (which I could have lived with) and a partly non-responsive touchscreen (which rendered the phone useless).

Another thing about me is that I am good at following directions and recipes. Luckily, nowadays there is an abundance of directions on the internet both in written form and as videos. This enabled me to repair my dish washer, fix a couple things on my car and once even to repair my broken TV by replacing the horizontal reflection transformer.

So I went to work and watched a couple Youtube videos (http://goo.gl/fVxreu, http://goo.gl/JIjWkT) about replacing the display on a Nexus 4 and came to the conclusion that this is not rocket science. Fortunately the prices for the displays have come down on eBay quite a bit and I got mine for $60.

When the package arrived today I immediately started to take my phone apart. That was not quite as easy as the videos made it out to be but in the end I managed. The tools which came with the display were of very low quality and I could only use the Torx screwdriver. The Phillips screw driver was a bad joke. It got all bent out of shape while working on the very first screw.

Long story short, in the end I succeeded and now have a working Nexus 4 again….until the next mishap happens….

Tatort aus der ARD Mediathek herunterladen

Heute mal schnell was auf Deutsch und aus dem Themengebiet Technik und IT. Wer sich aus der ARD Mediathek Videos herunterladen und dauerhaft sichern moechte, dem sei das Tool StreamTransport ans Herz gelegt. Diese Software beinhaltet einen Browser, mit dem ihr einfach zum gewuenschten Video navigieren und den Download dann starten koennt. Funktioniert uebrigens nicht nur mit der Mediathek sondern mit jeder Menge Streaming-Sites.

Nun aber hatte ich bei der Archivierung von HD Tatort-Folgen das Problem, dass der Download immer nach ca 85% einfror. Falls ihr das gleiche Problem habt, dann habe ich folgende Loesung fuer euch parat:

Startet StreamTransport und navigiert zum Tatort-Video. Dort waehlt zunaechst den HD-Stream (Groesse "L") und schaut euch die URL im unteren Fenster genauer an - ihr werdet eine Format-ID finden (oberer Link im Bild, klick fuer Originalgroesse). Diese merken wir uns mal. Das Problem mit dieser URL ist jedoch, dass es sich um einen RTMP-Link handelt, der nur mit speziellen Tool (wie z.B. StreamTransport) gespeichert werden kann.
Im naechsten Schritt starten wir nun den "kleinen" Stream (Groesse "S") und siehe da, diese Aufloesung verraet uns den normalen HTTP-Link, den wir in jeden Browser oder Download Manager werfen koennen. Ungluecklicherweise funktioniert Copy&Paste nicht aus diesem Log-Fenster, so dass wir kurz den Download anstossen muessen. Im nun erscheinenden Download-Fenster koennen wir den Link per Copy&Paste extrahieren.

Alles was wir nun in der Url aendern muessen ist die Format-ID. Im Beispiel des Screenshots also von 487859 zu 487860. Das Ergebnis koennt ihr dann in die Adresszeile eures Browsers eingeben und das Video startet. Ein Rechtsklick auf das Video fordert nun die Moeglichkeit zum Download zutage.

A Number of Annoying Things #4

You are trying to pull out from a side street left onto a busy street. You wait and wait. Then suddenly there is a gap in the traffic coming from the right. Yeah! You look left and there is one single car approaching preventing you from succeeding in your daring maneuver. And then it happens. That single car suddenly breaks and turns into the road you are trying to pull out of. By that time the gap has closed however. And you are just extremely annoyed because several minutes of your life have been wasted just because some dou%*&ag was too lazy to move his left middle finger and flick on his turn signals.

Kabel Deutschland - Geschichte einer Störung

Seit etwas über einem Jahr lautet mein Internet-Provider Kabel Deutschland. Und ich bin alles andere als zufrieden. Häufig habe ich Probleme mit meiner Verbindung. In den meisten Fällen lässt sich das durch einen Neustart des Kabelmodems beheben. Manchmal aber auch nicht. Auch der von Kabel Deutschland gelieferte Wifi-Router war wohl häufig der Übeltäter. Zumindest läuft es etwas besser seitdem ich wieder meine FritzBox verwende.
Am vergangenen Montag jedoch gab es mal wieder einen 'echten' Ausfall. Nach dem Aufstehen stellte ich fest, dass mein Handy nicht wie gewohnt um 5:30 die neuesten Episoden meiner Podcasts heruntergeladen hatte. Schnell war das ganze Ausmaß klar: kompletter Kabel-Ausfall; TV, Telefon und Internet weg.
Im Büro nutzte ich die dortige Internetverbindung um eine Online-Störungsmeldung abzusetzen. Nach dem ersten Versuch gab es statt einer Bestätigung nur eine leere Seite. Also nochmal das Ganze. Die Stunden verstreichen ohne eine Reaktion seitens KDG. Als ich nach Hause kam hatte sich die Situation auch nicht verbessert. Also habe ich wohl oder übel die Service-Hotline angerufen. Hier mal ein paar generelle Kritikpunkte an besagter Hotline, die nicht nur auf den aktuellen Fall zutreffen:

• Nicht selten lange bis sehr lange Wartezeiten (aber das ist man ja gewohnt)
• Die Ansage, dass man seine Störungsmeldung auch online absetzen könnte, ist wenig sinnvoll wenn der Betroffene ein Problem mit seiner Internetverbindung hat. Zumal meine tagsüber abgesetzten Meldungen ja auch ins Leere liefen
• Man wird aufgefordert, sich dem System gegenüber zu identifizieren und seine Telefonnummer einzugeben. Diese Information wird anscheinend nur in den seltensten Fällen an den Hotline-Menschen weitergeleitet, so dass man sich dann gleich noch einmal identifizieren muss
• In zwei Fällen ist es mir passiert, dass ich nach ewigem Warten in der Schleife endlich einen Rufton hörte...und dann die Verbindung unterbrochen wurde. Ich weiss nicht, ob das ein technisches Problem ist oder ob der Hotliner entweder unabsichtlich der vorsätzlich die Verbindung unterbrochen hat

Nun gut, zurück zum aktuellen Fall. Ich rufe also an und nach ca 20 Minuten rede ich dann auch schon mit einem Menschen. Der Herr war ganz nett und nimmt alle meine Daten auf. Sagt, dass sonst keine andere Störung in meinem Gebiet bekannt sei und deshalb am nächsten Tag ein Techniker vorbeikommen könnte....zwischen 11 und 14 Uhr. Das passt mir zwar nicht wirklich in den Kram, einige von uns müssen ja auch ab und zu mal arbeiten, aber ich mache es möglich und bin am nächsten Tag um 11 Uhr wieder zu Hause. Um exakt 11:21 bekomme ich dann eine SMS mit dem folgenden Inhalt:

Sehr geerhte(r) Kunde(in), wir haben Ihren Auftrag mit der Nummer <...> abgeschlossen. Möglicherweise entstandene Unannehmlichkeiten aufgrund der Störung bitten wir zu entschuldigen. Wir bedanken und für Ihr Verständnis. Ihr Kabel Deutschland Service-Team.

Der Rechtschreibfehler ('wir bedanken und') stammt übrigens nicht von mir. Außerdem habe ich überhaupt kein Verständnis, für das sich KDG bedanken könnte. Ich mache es irgendwie möglich, mitten am Tag zu Hause zu sein um den Techniker zu empfangen, und dann taucht überhaupt niemand auf! Und an der Störung hat sich natürlich nichts geändert. Aber schön, dass der Auftrag abgeschlossen wurde.

Ich greife also wieder zum Handy und erreiche irgendwann wieder einen Menschen. Der prüft eine Zeit lang die Einträge im System und teilt mir mit, dass mein Ticket jetzt an ein anderes (Master-) Ticket angehängt wurde, da es doch eine größere netzseitige Störung sei. Dann wollte er noch etwas nachschauen und plötzlich war die Verbindung unterbrochen. Aber das kennen wir ja.

Ich mache mich also wieder auf den Weg ins Büro in der Hoffnung, dass die Störung dann ja wohl im Laufe des Tages behoben werden würde. Abends sah ich dann meine Hoffnung enttäuscht. Also der nächste Anruf bei der Hotline. Nachdem ich mich mal wieder (doppelt) identifiziert hatte und mein Problem geschildert hatte, bat mir der Hotliner an, dass am nächsten Tag wieder ein Techniker vorbeikommen könnte. Ich hatte sogar die Wahl zwischen 3 (großen) Zeitfenstern. Ich machte ihm darauf mit Nachdruck klar, dass ich nicht jeden Tag zu Hause sitzen und auf nicht auftauchende Techniker warten könnte. Ich wies auch nochmal auf die Aussage seines Kollegen hin, dass es wohl eine größere Störung sei und der Fehler ganz sicher nicht in meiner Wohnung zu suchen sei. Und siehe da, der Mensch suchte noch ein bisschen in seinen Systemen und fand heraus, dass am gleichen Tag eine Störungsmeldung von meinem Nachbarn über mir eröffnet wurde. Das war anscheinend der Grund, warum meine Störungsmeldung geschlossen wurde. Für meine Nachbarn wurde dann ein Technikertermin für den nächsten Tag vereinbart.

Weiß ja nicht, ob das jetzt hier noch einer liest, aber das muss man sich mal klar machen: Ich warte um 11 Uhr auf einen Techniker. Mein Nachbar meldet wenige Minuten vorher seine Störung. Daraufhin wird mein Auftrag geschlossen, mein Techniker abgesagt, und für meinen Nachbarn ein Technikertermin für den nächsten Tag vereinbart. Wenn das mal nicht nach Schilda klingt....

Ende der Geschichte: der Techniker hat am nächsten Tag die Störung behoben. Es gab wohl ein Problem mit der Stromversorgung des Kabelverteilerkastens im Keller. Damit hat der Totalausfall dann ja auch nur ca 2,5 Tage angedauert. Danke Kabel Deutschland.

Travel Blog: Day 172

Since it's been a while since the following events actually happened, I must rely on my diary, my fading memories and the blessings of digital photography. But I'll give it a shot.

So after I came back to Sydney on March 12th, 2010, I spent a couple of nights in a hostel in the Kings Cross district and then got on a train to the Blue Mountains. Met three Dutch people there and we went hiking together and found a geocache. It's really beautiful up there and easy to reach from Sydney. If you are in the area you should go. I came back to Sydney in time for St. Patrick's day.

Two days later I started my hitchhiking adventure.

My goal was to hitchhike from Sydney to Melbourne. I took the train to the station Loftus which is located on the edge of Sydney and close to a highway. I positioned myself at the side of the highway and unpacked my little sign that said "Won't kill you". I must admit that this was not my idea but something I read somewhere on the net. But that sign worked wonders. Over the next few days people laughed at me, waved at me, honked at me, took pictures of me. And some people actually gave me a ride. Some of those had already passed me and came back because the sign made them laugh. And one young man actually gave me a ride even though it was actually in the opposite way that he was going. He said he had some time and didn't mind.

For my first ride I had to wait about 25 minutes. I was picked up by a guy who was probably in his forties how was a native from Samoa. He must have had German relatives because his name was Heini Rasch and his brother's name was Fritz. He gave me a ride to the city where he lived and actually did a little detour to show me a great viewpoint.
I only had to wait 6 minutes until the next person picked me up and then 2.5 minutes for my third ride. Only the the fourth and last ride of the day was a little tricky. Nobody would stop for a long time and I figured that I probably picked a bad spot. So I moved it a bit and then it didn't take long before Bill stopped and let me hop on. We had some good conversation and after a while he offered to sleep in his guest house in the garden. That was awfully nice of him. He introduced me to his wife and we had dinner together and then breakfast the next morning. Really awesome people. On said morning Bill gave me a ride to nearby Hyams Beach, supposedly the beach with the whitest sand in the world. It was pretty white, I must admit.

On this day it took me 4 rides to get to Narooma where I walked around a bit and looked at the "Australia Rock". The average waiting time on this day was 18,5 minutes. Not bad at all. Next stop: Lakes Entrance!

Travel Blog: Follow Up #2

So, as I am currently recovering from an ankle surgery, I have the time to finally finish up my series of "Travel Blog" posts. Well, of course I've had enough time to do that in the last 2.5 years since I finished that trip (geez, has it been that long?) but now I feel that I really have no valid excuse not to do it. At 175cm (~ 5'9") I'm not exactly a giant but not a midget either. In fact I'm only slightly below average both in Germany and the US. But when you think about it, it means that half of the male population is taller than me. In general I don't really care but there are situations where it can make the difference between seeing something and not seeing something (so well): in theaters, at concerts and at sports events. And that's when tall people can be slightly annoying....

Missing a Tram/Bus/Train Even Though You Were on Time

I do have a short list of things that I meant to write about in this series of blog posts...but 'luckily' fate basically handed me another good one on a silver platter this morning.

The company I work for recently moved some of their offices to the other side of the river which makes for a longer commute for most of my colleagues and myself. So far I've been good and have used my bike every day since the move 2.5 weeks ago....putting up with lots of traffic (and the accompanying noise) as well as 19(!) traffic lights on the short 4 mile ride.

Today, however, I opted for the tram for various reasons - one of them being the weather. People who know me can tell you, that I have a special relationship with time and punctuality. I try to be on time whenever possible but I also try to minimize my wait times. And while public transportation in general is pretty good in Germany, I have already wasted countless hours waiting for delayed trains and trams. So this makes it even more annoying when you come to the station on time and see your tram depart 90 seconds early, as happened to me this morning....while it was raining, of course.

Things That are Closed When You Think They Shouldn't Be

Some time ago I had to renew my residential parking permit. The opening hours of the relevant office are not exactly what you would call customer friendly: Monday through Friday 8am - 12pm and Thursdays an additional 4 hours in the afternoon (2pm - 6pm).
So making it there during opening hours is hard enough, but when I finally managed to go there before work I was dumbfounded by a sign saying that the place was closed for the day due to the yearly office excursion. I have not the slightest idea what kind of excursion or field trips the city's employees get to do each year, but for me it was slightly annoying.

This is another try to reanimate this poor excuse of a blog. For quite some time I have been following the wonderful blog "1000 Awesome Things". So I thought since the positive side of life has been covered sufficiently, I might just write about small annoying things that can and do happen.
The idea is not to complain or whine, but maybe to make someone smile about the little mishaps.
All of the posts will be based on personal experiences.

Lyrics Snippet #21

A few weeks ago I went to karaoke night at the Irish Pub in Ludwigshafen (it's on every Thursday) and as always I was impressed by the quality of the singers. This is not your usual karaoke event where it's mostly drunk people bawling into the mic. Here you will see a lot of very talented singers. A couple girls sang the song "My Medicine" by "The Pretty Reckless". It was not a great performance but the song got stuck in my mind. I hadn't heard it before and, I must admit, until that evening I had not even heard of the band. I am very out of touch with today's music. Anyways, I thought the song was somewhat funny and it does have "ear worm" potential.

Making Use of Calendar Web Feeds

Finally a new post in this blog! Basically I just wanted to try if the iPad can be used to create blog posts conveniently. Luckily an interesting topic popped up: calendar web feeds. A few days ago I was looking for a way to automatically include all the EURO 2012 games into my google calendar. I found a very convenient solution that also made me aware of some other applications. One thing before we start: I didn't come up with all this. There is plenty of guides and blog posts out there covering this topic...I'm just compiling this info and adding some nice screenshots (btw, some (if not all) the screenshots are in German, but I'm sure they are still helpful).

So, what are some possible calendar sources:

• Google calendars: makes sense if you want to show your google meetings and appointments in another calendar application (see next list) or to include additional calendars like public holidays into your existing google calendar
  
• Facebook: you can include calendars for your contact's birthdays or your Facebook events
• All kinds of other sites that offer calendar feeds (like the one I found for the EURO 2012...more info later)

And what might be the calendar applications that can use those feeds? I'll cover the following:

• Google calendar, obviously
  
• The calendar on your iPhone or iPad
• Lotus Notes

So, how do you get the feeds addresses? In your google calendar you just click on the little arrow next to the calendar and then select 'calendar settings' (or similar). In the following window you click on the ICS button to display the calendar URL. Be aware that this only works if the privacy setting of the calendar allow this).

Google also offers some calendars you can include by clicking on 'search interesting calendars'. These includes public holidays of dozens of countries, calendars of sports events and even a calendar for your google contact's birthdays.

As mentioned before, another source is Facebook. To get the feeds for your events, go to the events page and find the 'export events' option:

Some random thing...

that has bothered me often and for a long time.
Imagine you walk into a sports bar to watch a game. This place makes a living off of showing sports and selling you food and drinks. And then you notice that the aspect ratio of the picture is messed up and that you see black bars on the top and the bottom of a wide screen TV...

It is really simple:
If you receive your TV signal via some digital medium and you own a wide screen TV, then please tell your digital TV receiver that you have a 16:9 TV and not a 4:3 TV. It's not rocket science!

OK, that really needed to be said.
